Adelaide Home Tips: Maintaining Your Gutters This Winter
Regularly maintaining your gutters can save you money
After years of offering my Adelaide home repair services, I understand how easy it is to forget about your gutters when you’ve just finished hours of yard work. It’s dirty, hard work to keep your gutters free of debris, so it’s an easy job to keep putting on the backburner. Unfortunately, the rainwater pooling around your foundation every time it rains provides a stark reminder that your gutters are due for a clean.
Winter is a tough time for gutters around Adelaide due to the sheer amount of debris falling off tall trees. Neglecting your gutters will shorten their useful life and can cost you thousands in repair or replacement.
Here’s how you can maintain your gutters this winter.
1. Start with an inspection
Gutter maintenance should be a regular job, but if you haven’t done yours for a while, you may need to check for damage, rust, and mould. Check for signs of clogging, leaks and holes, downspout problems, joint breakage, and improper sloping.
Quite a few problems can be cleared up by giving your gutters a good clean out, but others like rust and broken joints may need a professional to take a look.
2. Regularly clear out your gutters
You will need a ladder, a sturdy set of gloves, a brush, and something to scoop up debris. It’s surprising how fast gutters can fill up with debris, especially just before winter with all the autumn leaves falling. Give your gutters a good clean at least 3 or 4 times a year for best results.
But perhaps the best and safest way is engaging the services of a local Adelaide handyman to help with this.
3. Check your downpipes
Downpipes drain the water from your gutters to keep it from pooling around your home’s foundation. You can check they are doing their job by using a hose and running water through them. If the water isn’t flowing as it should, it might be possible to break up the debris with a high-pressure hose. If this doesn’t work, the downpipe may need to be removed and cleaned out.
4. Install gutter mesh
A good quality gutter mesh can block a lot of debris from falling into the gutter, but it won’t stop everything. You will still have to sweep leaves, sticks, and other small debris caught up in the mesh and wash away any silt and soot.
Keeping your gutters clean can be a big and challenging job, so it’s not for everybody. If you would like to ensure your gutters are in good working order this winter, get in touch with your local Adelaide Home Repair service.
