5 Signs Your Gutters Need Cleaning
About your gutters…
Gutter cleaning is one of those jobs many of us keep putting off until next weekend, and then that turns into next month and so on and so forth. Pretty soon, you have neglected your gutters for months, and it’s reached a critical mass where something needs to be done and quick.
Here are a few signs from an Adelaide handyman that your gutters need to be cleaned out yesterday.
1. Your roof has started to leak
Rainwater can’t drain properly when the gutter is full, which means it has nowhere to go but over the edge. However, some of it will flow back into the roof cavity. You don’t need an Adelaide handyman to tell you that this dangerous situation can lead to expensive repairs later on.
2. Your gutters are sagging
If you keep a compost heap, you know that moist organic matter quickly turns into fertile earth. Just like your compost heap, the organic matter trapped in your gutter will turn into compost, which gets very heavy after a deluge. Your gutter system is not designed to handle a great deal of weight and will start to sag noticeably if you have been neglecting it for a while.
3. Your house shifts a little every time it rains
Gutters are essential for draining water away from your home and its foundations. If they are full of debris, they will overflow. Water that should be headed to the storm drain will soak into the earth around your home. This can cause your home to shift a little every time you have a few wet days. If you notice your doors jamming or cracks in your ceiling after it rains, your full gutters could be the culprit.
4. You have plant peaking over the tops of your gutters
Once your gutter’s debris converts into fertile compost, any seeds dropped in there from surrounding trees or birds will sprout and grow. If you notice plant life growing in your gutters, I can guarantee they should be cleaned out as soon as possible.
5. You can’t remember the last time
If you can’t remember the last time you cleaned your gutters, you have left it for too long. Most gutters should be cleaned out at least every 12 months. If you live in a leafy suburb with lots of tall trees, they should be checked at least twice a year.
